For years, students applying to the University of Chicago had three primary options: Early Action (EA), Early Decision I (ED1), and Early Decision II (ED2).

Now, UChicago offers something even earlier.

Known informally as ED0, the official program is called Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN). It allows eligible students to apply before the traditional early deadlines and receive an admissions decision weeks earlier than other applicants. For students who know UChicago is their first choice, it can be one of the most strategically valuable opportunities in college admissions.

But there is a catch: not everyone can apply.

What Is UChicago ED0?

Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN) is a special admissions pathway available exclusively to students who have participated in an eligible UChicago Summer Session program during high school.

Students applying through SSEN submit a binding Early Decision application between September 1 and October 15 and receive a decision within approximately three weeks (or before November 1). 

In other words, students can potentially receive an admissions decision before most Early Decision and Early Action applications are even due.

Who Is Eligible for ED0?

Not every applicant can use this option.

To qualify, students must have completed an eligible UChicago Summer Session program during high school. UChicago expanded eligibility so that participation during any high school summer can potentially qualify a student for SSEN.

• Enrichment Programs
• Pre-College Programs
• Research-oriented Summer Session offerings

Why Did UChicago Create ED0?

UChicago has long been known for enrolling a significant percentage of its class through early admissions plans.

SSEN appears designed to strengthen connections with students who have already experienced UChicago firsthand through Summer Session programs. These students have spent time on campus (or in UChicago programming), engaged with faculty, and demonstrated sustained interest in the institution.

Critics also note that many summer programs require substantial tuition and that participation rates may therefore correlate with family resources. Supporters counter that UChicago is not admitting students simply because they attended a summer program. Applicants must still complete the same application process and meet the same academic standards. Regardless of where you fall in the debate, the existence of ED0 reflects a broader reality of modern college admissions: colleges are increasingly interested in identifying students who have a strong and specific connection to their institution. What Do You Need to Submit?

Students applying through SSEN complete the same core application components required of other first-year applicants.

That typically includes:

• Common Application or Coalition Application
• UChicago supplemental essays

• Standardized test scores (optional under UChicago’s test-optional policy)

Should You Apply ED0?

ED0 makes sense for students who meet three criteria:

1. UChicago is clearly their first-choice school.

Students interested in ED0 should treat the summer before senior year as their application-building season.

Ideally, by the start of senior year they should have:

• Identified recommenders

• Drafted and revised supplemental essays
• Finalized testing plans (if submitting scores)

Because decisions arrive so early, there is very little room for procrastination.

Final Thoughts: Is UChicago ED0 Worth It?

For students who have attended a UChicago Summer Session program and know the university is their top choice, SSEN may be one of the most compelling early admissions opportunities in the country.

The chance to receive an admissions decision before November is rare. It provides clarity, reduces uncertainty, and potentially allows students to spend the rest of senior year focused on academics rather than application deadlines.
